Ecocriticism

I recently read an article about Serenella Iovino who is an Italian academic involved in ‘Ecocriticism’.

This is an approach that looks at literature to find out how the relationships between human and non-human beings are portrayed and which also hopes to raise our consciousness of how we are part of nature.

She also says that the condition of the environment is in effect, for us, a litmus test to understand whether our society is just, fair and in good health.

It seems we know the answer ever more clearly now with climate change impacts so evident; especially this week in the UK and across Europe with temperature records being broken.

We must all play our part in demanding a better future for this and future generations. One way she recommends is that we be sure to educate our children in the care of the environment- something she believes is pushing at an open door- as so many children have a natural empathy for Nature.
